What Are Lomi Approved Products?

Lomi works to make composting waste a more compact, mess-free, and speedy process. With the press of a button, Lomi turns waste into Compost-ready Lomi Earth that is super rich in nutrients. It's essential to know which products are compostable and can be easily broken down in Lomi.

To make it easy for users to make that distinction, Pela has a certification called “Lomi Approved”. In the following section, you can check out some products that are Lomi Approved and safe to use with Lomi. We’ll also take a deeper dive into what the certification is all about.

Lomi Approved product list

Lomi Approved products are non-food compostable products that can be efficiently broken down by Lomi and transformed into compost-ready Lomi Earth. Listed in the table below are some of the products that are Lomi Approved.

What is Lomi Approved?

Lomi Approved is a certification for non-food compostable items that can be broken down by Lomi, biodegrade faster, and turn into compost over time. In order for products and packaging to be labeled as Lomi approved, they must:

Physically disintegrate to a minimum threshold size after a Lomi cycle
Disintegrate and biodegrade in a composting facility
Not release or become toxic chemicals that hinder plant growth or are harmful to the environment

There are several products and packaging brands that are Lomi Approved including Footprint, Eco Products, Equo, and more. When you are using Lomi Approved materials, it’s important to run a Lomi Approved cycle with a maximum of 10% Lomi Approved bioplastics to organic waste, and add a LomiPod with 50ml of water.

If you add materials that are not Lomi Approved, there is no guarantee that they will turn into compost ready Lomi Earth in Lomi.

How we test the products

We test products first-hand using Lomi to ensure that they can be used safely and efficiently. Here is how we test to see if a product passes the Lomi Approved or not:

1. Experimental set up

Using Lomi, we experiment with various products including food and bioplastics to ensure they are compatible with Lomi, can be broken down and can turn into compost over time. Let’s review what that looks like:

Step 1: Food waste and LomiPods

First, food waste from Recipe 8 (see table below) is roughly chopped and added into the Lomi bucket. Then, 1 LomiPod is added and 50mL of water is poured on top of the waste.

The start weight of Recipe 8 is the combined weight of the items mentioned above and is equal to 743 g.

Step 2: Bioplastic loading

First, a sample is cut into pieces that are smaller than 10cm x 10cm. Next, the sample pieces are weighed to make sure they weigh less than 10% of the total starting weight. To calculate this, we use the following formula: sample weight/(recipe 8 weight + sample weight) *100. Finally, the sample is placed on top of the food waste and a photo is taken to be used as a before photo.

The sample pieces are tucked into the sides of the bucket to prevent it from floating on top while the heavier, denser food waste gets broken down underneath it.

Step 3: Start Lomi

First, the Lomi Approved mode is selected on Lomi. This is done by holding the button down for a few seconds until the Lomi beeps. The green light will illuminate the Lomi Approved icon. The button is pressed once for the cycle to start.

2. Lomi Approved assessment:

In order to be certified as Lomi Approved, the sample must pass our criteria. Our criteria diligently tests the compatibility of each product and ensures that only certified compostable non-food materials are used with Lomi.

To physically pass the Lomi Approved Testing, we must answer “yes” to the following two questions:

Did the sample break into smaller pieces?
Is the biggest piece after the cycle ≤ 2.0cm²?
